Front-of-house service flow

A short introduction to front-of-house service flow.
In this lesson we look at front-of-house service flow and why it matters in the daily work of a banqueting assistant. Most entry-level mistakes are not caused by a lack of talent — they happen because nobody explained the routine clearly on the first shift.
Start with the basics: know what is expected before the shift begins, check that everything you need is ready, and ask a colleague when something is unclear. Guests rarely notice the steps you follow, but they always notice the result — a calm, tidy, welcoming service.
A useful habit is to think in three stages: prepare, perform, and check. Prepare means having the tools, information and presentation ready. Perform means following the standard even when the venue is busy. Check means taking a few seconds at the end to confirm nothing was missed and to report anything a colleague should know.
- Follow the venue's standard for front-of-house service flow every time.
- Ask a colleague or supervisor when you are unsure — it is always faster than fixing a mistake.
- Keep the guest informed, even when the answer is 'one moment please'.
